What is Hope?

Hello Everyone,

Over the last few years the word hope has been used in a presidential election as a slogan" Hope and Change" a few years before that in another presidential election as a place" A man from Hope". During the first Iraq war a general used it as a description"Hope is not a strategy". We use it everyday without thought to what it means. "I hope it doesn't rain" or "I hope the Cards make the playoffs".

Merriam's defines it like this:
Noun
1. a feeling that what is wanted is likely to happen; desire accompanied by expectation
2. the things that one has a hope for
3. a reason for hope
4. a person or thing on one may base some hope
5. Archaic, trust reliance
Verb
1. to have hope; want and expect
2. to want very much

Paul had a different definition in Romans 5 and Romans 8
Romans 5:1-5
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in HOPE in the glory of God. And not only that, but we but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character, and character, HOPE. Now HOPE does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which was given to us.

Romans 8:24,25
24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

The word hope has become nothing more than an adjective to describe something. We need to get back to where HOPE is a reverent trust in God our provider, comforter, protector, and loving Father.

Have a blessed week,
Billy
